When Do I Need a Mechanical Permit?

A mechanical permit is required to install, alter, repair, replace or remodel per Uniform Mechanical Code (UMC) Section 112.1 - Mechanical Permit Application.

A mechanical permit is not required for the following per UMC Section 112.2:

- Portable heating appliance, ventilating equipment, cooling unit or evaporative cooler.
- Closed system of steam, hot or chilled water piping within heating or cooling equipment regulated by this code.
- Replacement of any component part or assembly of an appliance which does not alter its original approval and   complies with the requirements of the 1997 Uniform Mechanical Code (UMC).
- Refrigerating equipment that is part of equipment for which a permit has been issued.
- A unit refrigerating system (i.e., window air conditioning units, portable air purifiers and air conditioners that plug into an outlet.)
